Microsoft has announced limited details of its next generation Xbox console in an attempt to woo gamers and developers at the Games Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

Although sketchy details included a plan for Gamer Cards that will provide gamers with a quick look at key Xbox Live information. The idea is to let players instantly connect with people who have similar skills, interests and lifestyles.

Other plans are to turn the Xbox Live! service into an online shop offering games and new content for those games.

The final feature announced will be Custom playlists. This feature eliminates the need for developers to support custom music in games. The guide instantly connects players to their music so they can listen to their own tracks while playing.

Microsoft gave away little in regards to actual specs of the machine however did suggest that it would be aiming delivering more than a teraflop of targeted computing performance, A multicore processor architecture co-developed with IBM Corp. that provides developer "headroom" and flexibility for the HD Era and A custom-designed graphics processor co-developed with ATI Technologies Inc. designed for HD Era games and entertainment applications.
