Keep safe, keep legal, keep that license

NEWS: 26 September 2007 0:00 GMT by Ian Hughes

Now I don't want any of you to think that today's recommendation is in any way influenced by the letter I received last week. The one adding a three points to my licence and asking for £60 because I had the barefaced cheek to drive over Tower Bridge at a reckless 29mph. Or the one I received the day after adding a further four points and asking for £155 for driving over Tower Bridge at, um, 29mph. (I nailed the letterbox shut after that!)

Oh no. This just happens to be the next on my list. Honest.

It's a sad fact that speed cameras (I can't bring myself to call them safety cameras) are very much part of the landscape. They're popping up everywhere. And they're not always painted bright yellow and visible from 3 miles up the road either. The new generation are smaller, more accurate and worst of all they're digital so never run out of film.

I'm not for one second advocate speeding or reckless behaviour of any sort, but it's all too easy these days to miss a speed limit sign as the road inperceptiblly changes from pleasant throughfare to highway of death. The consequences are, believe me, extremely expensive, as your insurance sky-rockets and you can forget renting anything other than a rickshaw.

Your options? Buy a satnav with speed camera detection or bookmark this page now.

It lists all the known locations and is updated as regularly as new information comes in.

And yes, I wish I'd seen it ages ago too…
