NEW TODAY:

Kodak to add GPS to camera range

But you'll have to wait 'til 2009

NEWS: 11 October 2007 11:11 GMT by Stuart Miles

Kodak has said that it will include GPS in its camera range by 2009 to allow users to location images easily.

According to John O'Grady, the MD for Europe, Africa and Middle East, the technology will be featured in the background rather than as an addition offering that would compete with satnav.

"The ability to know where you are will help you place your images", O'Grady told Pocket-lint.

According to Kodak, the GPS information will be added to the metadata of the photo allowing you to search for images shot in a specific country or location such as shots taken in Chelsea.

GPS is likely to be the next big thing in the camera world as more and more people look to capture location data.

There are currently 23 million images with location data available on Flickr.

Have Your Say
  • I cannot wait. "by 2009" well I guess that'll be mid~late 2009, anyway its 2008 already - but I have to say that if they want that to work their on the right track with it being a background job, I just hope at the other end (on a users computer) that it will not be let down: whats needed are complementary reverse-geotagging tools to turn the GPS co-ordinates into human understandable data such a "Chelsea" but also to get it down to street level - for that the system may need to work with the EU Galileo rival US GPS project (for the accuracy)

Also I hope Kodak understand that Flickr is in the lead with this and that Google have an excellent Mapping service, so restricting any on-board camera uploading to anything other than their own Kodak service is ridiculous.

Once Kodak has this, everybody will.. which means the iPhone!! and of course Fuji cameras and SONY etc... I hope they get the battery drain problem solved - in fact that and the location locking speed are the only two problems, Nokia's N95 camera proves it works for day to day image taking
