YouTube to offer HD within 3 months

Higher quality video currently being tested

NEWS: 15 November 2007 17:46 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Speaking at the NewTeeVee conference, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen confirmed that YouTube was testing HD video, reports CNet and TechCrunch.

Chen said that YouTube's goal remains on the primarily focus of making the site's vast library of content available to everyone which, with many people still on slower internet connections, requires a fairly low bitrate stream.

But, he did confirm that the site is testing a player that detects the speed of the viewer's connection and could offer higher-quality video if they want it.

Buffering times being too slow and possibly driving viewers away is one of the problems the team are said to be tackling. Chen told CNet that the first HD content on YouTube should be available within 3 months.
