Brits favour Facebook for keeping in touch

Our love of social networking

NEWS: 12 December 2007 13:21 GMT by Katie Scott

It seems that Facebook, and social networking sites like it, are the most popular way to keep in touch with friends and family in the UK.

Ofcom has revealed in a survey that British adults are more frequent users of social networking sites than their counterparts in any other European country.

Four in ten of us use internet connection to keep in touch with friends and family using websites such as Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.

The figure compares with 17% in France, 12% in Germany and 22% in Italy.

In fact, our love of these sites is surpassed only by the Canadians as British web wanderers make an average of 23 visits and spend more than 5 hours each month socially networking online.

Ofcom pointed to the high usage of the internet among British women stating among people aged between 25 and 34, women account for 55% of the time spent online.
