QuickTime patch fixes security flaw

Apple criticised as slow to act

NEWS: 14 December 2007 13:16 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Apple has issued at update for QuickTime. The 7.3.1 release patches several bugs including a 3-week-old Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) streaming media vulnerability.

This slowness to respond has led to criticism from some quarters: "In classic Apple style, security researchers have been shouting the warning about this, and Apple has sat quietly, leaving many people wondering when an update might be available", said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Inc.

"[Then] without any advance notification, we have an update. There will undoubtedly be some people working late this week to not only catch up from the big Microsoft 'Patch Tuesday' release, but now also to update Apple QuickTime."

The QuickTime 7.3.1 update is available now via built-in Software Update feature in OS X, while Windows users can download the patch from the Apple site or use the Windows-only update tool.
