RIM doubles profits from BlackBerry sales

Up 100% compared to 2006

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has doubled its profits in the last quarter following strong demand for its smartphones from consumers and businesses alike.

Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2008 was $1.67 billion, up 22% from $1.37 billion in the previous quarter and up 100% from $835.1 million in the same quarter of last year.

The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 80% for devices, 14% for service, 4% for software and 2% for other revenue.

Approximately 1.65 million BlackBerry subscriber accounts were added in the quarter and over 3.9 million devices were shipped according to the manufacturer.

The results mean that there are now 12m BlackBerry subscribers around the world.

RIM has said that it expects revenue for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2008 ending March 1, 2008 is expected to be in the range of $1.80-$1.87 billion.

RIMM shares were up 10% on the news.
