Sony has announced it is to be the latest company to exit the rear-projection television market.
The Japanese electronics giant said it is to focus its future resources on LCD and OLED technology, seeing the flat-screen market as the way forward for consumer's living rooms.
Company spokesman Shinji Obana said the firm plans to stop making rear-projection TVs at three plants in Japan, as well as overseas, in February.
Seiko Epson and Hitachi have recently made similar statements.
Sony revealed that it was forced to reduce its rear-projection TV sales target for the year to March by 43% to 400,000 units, following poor sales.
Recent data from Gfk shows that sales of flat screen televisions have risen by 182% year-on-year as the prices of these kind of sets fall.
