Sony has taken the wraps off the first OLED television at CES in Las Vegas.

However before you rush to the shops to replace your living room TV, the technology is still in its infancy with the first model, the XEL-1 just 11-inches in size.

Why would you want a OLED TV? Two reasons; the size and the contrast ratio is 1,000,000:1 rather than the regular 10,000 - 30,000:1 contrast ratios on current LCD televisions.

“The launch of an OLED TV is one of the most important industry landmarks,” said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division. “Not only does the technology change the form factor of television, it delivers flawless picture quality that will soon become the standard against which all TVs are measured.”

The XEL-1 OLED TV is now available for about $2,500.
