Yahoo Finds of the Year winners announced

Best of the web unveiled

Yahoo has announced the eight winners of its annual Yahoo Finds of the Year campaign.

The panel of expert judges, including Pocket-lint's very own Stuart Miles, have cast their votes per category.

While it was no easy decision, the judges chose winners in each category based on a shortlist of 40 of the best site the Net had to offer.

Amongst the winners were The Nag (www.thenag.net) in the Ethical category for providing consumers with an individual way of making the world a better place one click at a time; World Reviewer (www.worldreviewer.com) in the Travel category for inspiring travellers to try something different; Doggy Snaps (www.doggysnaps.com) in the Social category for social networking with a twist including pooch personalities; and Faces in Places (www.facesinplaces.blogspot.com) in the Weird and Wonderful section, this category produced some of the most entertaining areas of the World Wide Web.

These are just a few of the winning sites which entertain, inspire and inform people and deserve to be celebrated for their efforts. Other winning sites included Move Me (www.moveme.com) in the Innovative category, Friends Abroad (www.friendsabroad.co.uk for the Educational category and the inspirational Nigel’s Eco Store (www.nigelsecostore.com) for the Shopping category.

In addition to Stuart, the judging panel consists of experts with a special interest in the online world. This year’s panel includes Claire Woffenden (WebUser), Haje Jan Kamps (T3), Mark Harris (freelance journalist for The Metro, Independent and T3), Michael Phillips (last year’s People’s Choice winner, Cowforce.com), Nigel Powell (freelance journalist for The Sunday Times), Salim Mitha (Yahoo! Search), Serena Privett (vogue.com), Tom Whitwell (Times online) and Andy Williams (Yahoo!).

Best Innovative Website:
Move Me (www.moveme.com): Move Me takes away the stress of moving house in a matter of minutes by telling you everything you need to do and when to do it all on one easy calendar

Best Educational Website:
Friends Abroad (www.friendsabroad.co.uk): Friends Abroad is a language learning network with a community of millions of users in over 200 countries speaking over 80 languages. Free to join, it’s a great way to polish up your foreign language skills

Best Social Website:
Doggy Snaps (www.doggysnaps.com): Doggy Snaps is the first UK-based web site dedicated to dog lovers where they can build profiles for their canine companions and share their ‘pooch personalities.’ The social site allows users to swap dog related tips, photos, stories and ideas.

Best Weird and Wonderful Website:
Faces in Places (www.facesinplaces.blogspot.com): Faces in Places is a showcase of images of faces that people have found in the most unusual places. Once you visit this site you’ll see faces every day in household objects, architecture and even your food!

Best Charitable Website:
Free Rice (www.freerice.com): A great site created for everyone, Free Rice is an online game that tests your vocabulary knowledge and converts correct answers to rice donations. It was set up to help the World Food Programme.

Best Shopping Website:
Nigel’s Eco Store (www.nigelsecostore.com): Nigel’s Eco Store is an online retailer of environmentally friendly products and gifts. They only stock products that they have touched, seen, tried or used. This site offers everything from eco staplers that don’t use staples, solar powered electric shavers to an eco kettle that saves energy and money.
