Nokia launches 2600 Classic and 1209 for emerging markets

Customisable and easy-to-share consumer handsets

NEWS: 22 January 2008 9:42 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Nokia has announced the Nokia 2600 classic and the Nokia 1209, two handsets aimed specifically at consumers in emerging markets.

The Nokia 2600 classic, now shipping, will retail for approximately 65 euros (around £50), while the Nokia 1209 will be

available during the second quarter of 2008 and will retail for approximately 35 euros (about £25).

Although a low cost offering, the 2600 allows owners to customise their phone with colourful, fully changeable Xpress-on covers and MP3 ring tones, something there is a demand for according to Nokia research.

The Nokia 2600 classic, described as "cheerful" by the company, also has entertainment features, including an FM radio and a VGA camera.

The Nokia 1209 offers "cost management" features to make phone sharing (which happens a lot in emerging markets apparently) easier.

A pre-paid tracker, a cost-tracking application, and a multiple phonebook - which allows up to five people to store personal contact lists of up to two hundred numbers - all contribute to make this an easy-to-share handset.

Designed for first time buyers, the Nokia 1209 is dust resistance, offers up to 80 languages and has a one-piece key mat for durability.
