Following the launch of iTunes Movie Rentals ("movies from all the major studios from $2.99") iPod owners in the States are discovering that this service is only available to those who own one of the very latest Apple devices.

Although Apple did add this caveat as an asterisked footnote to the official announcement, it seems that many assumed the new rental service would work across Apple's older video-enabled product line, but this is not the case.

The exact phrase from Apple: "Movie rentals work on iPod classic, iPod nano with video and iPod touch", means that renting movies via iTunes and taking them with them on their iPod is not an option for anyone who has not purchased a new Apple offering in the last year.

Owners who have tried, and failed, to transfer movie rentals to their 5th gen iPods have been posting confused and angry comments to Apple's support forums.

One angry user states: "Why on earth would they not make this service available to 5th gen iPods? Mine is less than 6 months old!".

  • I paid for the rental of the Hitmam film last night and spent a frustrating 2 hours trying to get it onto my Ipod 30GB 5th generation. I am now out of pocket and cannot watch the film !! Posted by Andrew Fordyce, UK
