Asus announces whole "family" of Eee products

But says touchscreen version will not be produced

NEWS: 30 January 2008 12:15 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Not about to sit back and let the success of the Eee pass them by, Asus has announced it is planning to launch a "family" of Eee products.

The new Eee-flavoured offerings are to include the E-DT, a desktop PC, the E-TV television and an "E-Monitor".

Announced by Jerry Shen, president of Asustek, the new devices will apparently keep the same low-cost price points as the Eee itself.

The E-DT, a PC to be sold without a monitor, is scheduled to launch in April or May this year and will be showcased at CeBIT 2008. The company has set the price of the PC at between $200-300, although it says it's trying to hit the $199 mark.

The E-Monitor will be an all-in-one device similar to Apple's iMac and Dell's XPS One. Complete with built-in TV tuner, its said it will be aimed at the 19- to 21-inch market. Pricing will be $499 and it's due for a launch in September this year.

The E-TV will enter the over 42-inch LCD TV market, but will integrate the Linux-based PC functionality of other Eee PC products. Also due for a September launch, the price for the TV is "to be set to at no greater than $200 more than TVs in the same class".

During the announcement, Shen revealed that Asus' market research has determined that a touchscreen version of the Eee "is not a highly demanded feature" and it has suspended plans to produce such a model.
