This site was thrust into the limelight late last week when they quite rightly claimed a victory over the high street giant Woolworths and illustrated the potential power of the web.

Woolies' new online catalogue contained a bedroom suite, aimed at 6-year-old girls, rather ill-advisedly called "Lolita".

An outraged Mum posted a message on Raising Kids and got an unstoppable ball rolling. It's not the first time that shops have been caught selling wholly inappropriate stuff aimed at children - Bhs thongs for pre-teens, half naked Barbie dolls and even the mighty Tesco were caught out with their pole-dancing kit.

Woolies withdrew the item within hours, claiming that nobody had realised that the name could be misconceived. Nobody in the entire organisation, or so it would seem, had ever read any Nabokov.

Job done as far as this informative and highly useful parenting site is concerned and we salute all involved.

  • I have just seen on the Daily Mail website that a Father Jones, a priest from York took action in his local Stationery Box store after having seen Playboy merchandise being sold next to Winnie the Pooh products there He expressed disgust and walked out of the shop.He returned again with a petition he'd got up with numerous signatures of concerned parents, then he removed the offending items to an empty shelf. Judging by the comments on the site, he has a lot of support.
As a Grandmother-to-be, I feel real fear for children born in these wicked times. And I wondered how many parents here felt strongly enough to want to do something about this kind of thing. In the past I have refused to shop
in these stores that put sales before the good of children, so we can make a difference but it takes will.
