Despite only launching late June 2007, more iPhones sold in the fourth quarter of the year than Windows Mobile smartphones in the US, according to research from Canalys.

RIM's BlackBerrys took the largest share, with 41% of the US converged-device market, but the iPhone apparently enjoyed a healthy 28%.

Windows Mobile phones had 21% share of devices sold in the quarter, falling into third place behind Apple.

When you start looking at the global market things change. Nokia, not so large in the US, but big worldwide, had 52.9% of smartphones sold worldwide in the fourth quarter.

Despite only being available in a select few countries, Apple managed third place on a global level with 6.5%, beating Motorola.
