Samsung laptop battery melts

Officials in South Korea confirm danger

NEWS: 26 February 2008 10:11 GMT by Katie Scott

Samsung Electronics and South Korea's fire service have confirmed that a battery in one of the manufacturer's laptops melted in its owner's home.

A Samsung's spokesman told Reuters that the notebook was the P10 model, which was produced in 2002 but did not give further details such as a producer of the battery.

"We are checking details of the incident", James Chung, the company spokesman, said by telephone.

According to the fire service report, the notebook battery emitted smoke after being used for about three and a half hours on a pillow.

The battery burned a bed and also the floor a little, but did not cause a big fire.

The investigation continues.
