Pentagon censors Google Maps

Strangely, doesn't want detailed imagery of military sites online

NEWS: 7 March 2008 14:19 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

The Pentagon has made Google remove images of an Texas army base shown in detail on the "Maps" section of the internet giant's site.

In a thoroughly unsurprising move, the US defence department has now banned Google from filming inside, and making detailed studies of, US military bases.

A spokesperson said that the close-up, ground-level imagery of US military sites posed a "potential threat" to security.

Google has removed the offending imagery and said that it was a "mistake" that it had been shot and uploaded in the first place.
