WEBSITE OF THE DAY - cairnomohr.co.uk Fine fruit wines from Scotland's strangest winery.

It was one of those discoveries that was to change things forever.
Bear with me a moment as I explain:
The wife and I had just driven the length of the country to enjoy a week's break in a cottage in beautiful Perthshire - gateway to the Scottish Highlands.
The usual rudimentary assessments were carried out as we surveyed our new surroundings:
Roof? Check.
Locking doors? Check.
Hot running water? Check.
Huge pile of dog-eared leaflets for "attractions" that we will never, ever go to even if our lives depended on it? Check.
And it was here that everything changed. Buried in the midst of all this hackneyed, cliché-ridden puffery was a nugget of purest literary gold.
The front proclaimed proudly: "The half-baked tourist attraction. There's nothing to do and not much to see. Great wine though" The leaflet went on in a similar vein and was surely the first time I've ever been genuinely amused by a tourist flyer.
The prospect was just too intriguing a prospect and we had to pay a visit.
Cairn O' Mohr is one of those businesses that you would just love to be somehow involved with. They go about producing their award-winning fruit wines with just about the best attitude you can imagine. The place itself is somewhat ramshackle with strange wooden sculptures and wine-making ephemera dotted about the place, but as soon as you pop your head round the door you know you're in a happy place.
Their parties are legendary and some of their special edition wines now swap hands for hundreds of pounds.
Happily, most of their wide range are just over a fiver a bottle and with bulk discounts available, they're sure to become firm favourites of anybody who tries them.
This quirky site is where you can read their remarkable story and stock up. Ron's blog is strangely compulsive reading and there's even regular competitions to win free bottles of wine.
Buy some. Buy some today. Just go a bit easy if you do partake: Mrs H and I took six bottles back to our cottage and the rest of the week passed in a bit of a blur...
