Intel to launch "Classmate" PC in Europe and US

Eee-rival to launch for $250

NEWS: 20 March 2008 9:29 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Chip-maker Intel has revealed it will launch its low-cost educational "Classmate" PC in Europe and the US.

Originally designed for children in developing nations, the Classmate was initially more of a rival to the XO machine from the OLPC project, but the launch into the western world will see the little laptop go head to head with Asus' low-cost Eee UMPC.

Intel has sold less than 100,000 Classmates so far, to countries including India, Mexico and Indonesia, but it will be the second-gen model, specs of which are yet to be revealed, that will go on sale in the States and Europe for between $250 to $300.
