Mozilla says Firefox 3 ready for masses

Reuters claims its no longer just for testers

NEWS: 21 March 2008 16:46 GMT by Stuart Miles

Mozilla developers have told Reuters that Firefox 3, the latest version of its internet browser, still in beta, is ready for the masses.

According to the news agency the "program's creators told Reuters on Thursday that the privately-held company's trial version of Firefox 3 browser is ready for the masses to use after months of development".

Up until now, Mozilla has suggested that only testers and developers download the software to use.

"In many ways it (Firefox 3) is much more stable than anything else out there", Mozilla's vice president of engineering Mike Schroepfer said in an interview with Reuters.

However on the company's blog it is still suggesting that "the Firefox 3 Beta 4 milestone release is intended for testing purposes only and is not for casual users".

Mozilla say that Firefox 3 offers a number of improvements over Firefox 2, first released in 2006, including enhancements to the user interface, richer personalisation, and faster performance improvements thanks to memory usage being drastically reduced so it doesn't consumed memory over long web browsing sessions.

The final version is due to be available in June.
