NEW TODAY:

Amazon launches text message purchases in the States

SMS shopping

NEWS: 2 April 2008 9:49 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Over in the States, etailing giant Amazon has unveiled another way for shoppers to purchase goods from their site - via SMS.

Amazon's new "TextBuyIt" service lets people text the name of a product, its description or its UPC or ISBN to 262966 (that's "Amazon") from anywhere.

If Amazon stocks matching items, the service returns two results at a time and shoppers can immediately buy one of the first two the selections by texting back the number "1" or "2", or they can ask for more info by texting the letter "M".

Customers then enter their email address, a shipping zip code and the service then calls them and walks through the checkout process using an automated voice system.
