Adobe creates new video format

Hopes to standardise cinema for film makers

NEWS: 15 April 2008 9:55 GMT by Stuart Miles

Adobe hopes to create a new industry standard for video used in cinemas in the same way that it has done for print documents, the company has announced.

Called CinemaDNG, Adobe says it intends to leverage its current Digital Negative Specification (DNG) file format to create the new standard.

According to Adobe, the new publicly documented and open file format, CinemaDNG would offer several advantages for filmmakers including interoperability within the industry from camera to screen.

Although currently aimed at the professional movie making industry if the standard becomes a success it could easy filter down into entry-level professional models very much like the RAW format has done in digital SLR models.

Adobe says the need for a unified format will stop filmmakers who are opting for film being hit by delays and problems as their projects pass through multiple vendors dealing with multiple file formats and standards.
