T-Mobile confirms Android handsets this year

"More than one product"

NEWS: 24 April 2008 8:51 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

T-Mobile USA has revealed it is preparing to ship out its first mobile phones built on Google Android platform later this year.

We knew this was the plan - in November of last year, when the Open Handset Alliance was formed, Rene Obermann, the CEO of founder member Deutsch Telecom (parent company of T-Mobile) who has partnered with Google on Web'n'walk services since 2005, confirmed they would be bringing Android handsets to market in 2008.

He stated that the T-Mobile Android offerings would offer "better than internet experience" and offer user driven content social platforms.

But more recently, at wireless conference in California, Joe Sims, vice president and general manager of T-Mobile's broadband and new business division, said he had already seen prototypes of the company's Android-based phone, and that the consumer-aimed devices are scheduled to ship in the last quarter of 2008.

"I'm impressed," he said. "We will have more than one product ...( The move to an open platform) will be innovation across the board, not just one device."
