Radiohead scraps free music downloads

In Rainbows was a "one-off response"

NEWS: 2 May 2008 9:24 GMT by Katie Scott

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has said in an interview that the band is not going to be offering its albums on a pay-as-much-as-you like basis again.

The British band hit the headlines after opting to release the digital version of its last album, In Rainbows, for free on the world wide web.

Fans were asked just to pay as much as they thought the songs were worth.

But reports in November suggested that only 38% of fans actually paid out for the record, and the average amount paid from those who did, was just £2.87 - figures the band has denied.

But Yorke has now told The Hollywood Reporter that the move was "a one-off response to a particular situation", and won't be repeated.

Yorke told the magazine: "I don't think it would have the same significance now if we chose to give something away again. It was a moment in time", he said.
