Pirate Bay sued

Motion Picture Association after £8 million

NEWS: 8 May 2008 22:50 GMT by Stuart Miles

The Motion Picture Association has filed a copyright infringement case against the people behind Pirate Bay for SEK93 million (£7.9 million).

According to reports online, the claim focuses on "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", "The Pink Panther", "Syriana", "Walk the Line" and 13 episodes from the first season of "Prison Break".

The damages, brought by the MPA's lawyers in Sweden MAQS, has said that it is looking for SEK222 to SEK261 per downloaded movie, and SEK415 for every copy of Prison Break.

Included in the final sum is also interest, which will continue to grow, and damages for the harm Pirate Bay has caused.

In an interview with TorrentFreak, a weblog dedicated to bringing the latest news about BitTorrent, Pirate Bay’s Peter Sunde (Brokep) claims Hollywood is trying "to make us look like big criminals by adding some zeros to a claim for a made-up crime".

The trial is expected to start in the next couple of months.
