Although there's been no official announcement, it's being reported that the US Apple public relations team has confirmed to Fortune that Steve Jobs will deliver a keynote address on 9 June, the first day of the 2008 world wide developers conference.

This is the big Apple event where Jobs is expected to reveal the iPhone 2.0 - the 3G, next-gen version of the popular mobile phone.

Current stock shortages of the iPhone in both the UK and the US are leading to increased speculation that the 3G version will go on sale soon, with an on-sale date estimated to be 15 June and 12 July.

Further fueling the fire, MacRumors has discovered a virtual "switch" in the latest release of the iPhone 2.0 firmware that will let users turn 3G data connectivty on or off to conserve battery life.

Apple is now offering the download of a Dashboard widget that counts down to the start of the WWDC (and as we now know, keynote) on 9 June, by days, hours, minutes and seconds.
