Vodafone expanding 7.2Mbps mobile broadband

As 3 files complaint with ASA

NEWS: 12 May 2008 14:25 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

Vodafone has announced that this summer it will begin a multi-million pound investment to extend its fast 7.2Mbps mobile broadband network to a further three million people across six major conurbations: Birmingham, Bristol. Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Reading.

These towns and cities join London and major British airports, which were the first locations to benefit from Vodafone's high speed upgrade in 2007.

This follows the news that rival mobile operator 3 has filed an official complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority against Vodafone about its claims for mobile broadband speed.

3 have complained about a Vodafone ad stating that their mobile broadband offers 7.2Mbps speeds, and not being clear on the geographical restrictions.

Perhaps in response to this, Vodafone has also announced that customers will "see a change in the way Vodafone UK sells Mobile Broadband" with more info at the point of sale to help them understand the time it will take to download files, films and music on the mobile broadband network.

Have Your Say
  • I have recently bought a vodfone broadband USB stick expecting to get high speed access to the internet. It seemed like an answer to all my problems when travelling around the country. BUTwhat I actually get is a max connection speed of 53Kbs - slower than the old dial up! I have queried with Vodafone but no-one can explain why. I know sometimes I am not in a 3G reception area but I thought I should still get a good speed level providing I have 4 bars reception on my phone.

I wonder if the set up needs some sorting - but if so Vodafone arent aware of it.

  • George, I personally use a Vodafone 7.2Mb dongle for filing stories for Pocket-lint when out in the field.

While the speed connection does vary (Richmond on Thames in a black hole) in London the connection is always very fast allowing me to surf the web, upload images and do everything I would as if I was on a home connection.

I would check to make sure you haven't got a faulty dongle.

  • Thanks for your comments Stuart - I guess I will have to take it to a Vodafone shop and get them to test it.
