Computer giant Dell is to drop the XPS sub-brand for its performance PCs in order to concentrate on Alienware offerings, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.

Dell bought Alienware, the gaming PC specialist, back in March 2006 and at the time said that Alienware would operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary and would maintain its own product development, product marketing, sales, technical support and other operations as well as brand.

But, 2 years down the line and the WSJ states that Dell will drop four models of XPS performance PCs as of next month, although it's not yet clear if Dell's XPS laptops will also be for the chop.

There's been no official comment from the company as yet, we will keep you informed.

UPDATE: Dell has denied this and says its XPS line will continue.
