ARM promising 1080p HD TV on mobiles

New GPU could revolutionise mobile TV

NEWS: 3 June 2008 11:47 GMT by Katie Scott

A new Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) could see 1080p high definition TV brought to mobile devices, including phones.

Here's the science bit - the Multi-core Mali-400 MP from ARM has a single vertex processor capable of 30 million triangles a second.

This is claimed by the company to be "way beyond the requirements even of current consoles".

And the GPU can also hold between one and four fragment processors - and, with four, can fill more than a billion pixels a second, which is enough to deliver 1080p.

"We are still trying to work through this but in terms of IP (ie chip design) vendors, and perhaps also GPU [silicon] vendors, we think we are the only people to offer full OpenGL ES 1.0 1080p for HD TV", said an ARM spokesperson.

Products using the Mali-400 GPU may start appearing on the market by 2010.

Have Your Say
  • Why on earth do you need 1080p on a screen a few inches wide, there is no way a human eye could notice the difference, utterly pointless untill people think the 'need' 1080p HD on thier phone

  • Could be good for TV-out. Also I imagine the GPU power can be put to other uses than just more pixels on the screen. If rendering at a lower res I suppose the extra resources can be used for more elaborate 3D models, textures, draw depth, effects etc.

I wonder if it can also be re-purposed to assist video decoding/encoding. That would be very useful on a mobile too.

  • Imagine the data costs to download a full hd movie over 3G. Even capped "unlimited" would not be enough! Imagine accidently going over any limit by watching another film!
    Syd, UK
  • I agree with Pete, it is utterly pointless to report this as feature of a mobile GPU. At normal viewing distances it is difficult to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 32" TV, let alone a screen a few inches wide.

The PSP has a screen resolution of 480x272 which is very decent for watching movies on a 4.3 inch screen.

    1080p? You must be insane.
