Amsterdam gets mobile WiMAX network

Cheap and speedy mobile broadband

NEWS: 18 June 2008 9:49 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

A mobile WiMAX network has launched in Amsterdam, the first to do so in Europe, offering near-broadband speeds.

Using a mobile version of the WiMAX standard that lets users surf the web at high speeds while on the move, it differs from earlier versions of the technology that could only be used when stationary.

The network will initially just cover Amsterdam city centre, but WorldMax said it plans to extend it across the country in coming years with a total cost to do so running into hundreds of millions of dollars.

WorldMax will charge users about 20 euros (£16-ish) per month for a wireless broadband connection for laptop computers with unlimited amount of data on a pay as you go basis.
