O2 has confirmed the pricing for its Pay and Go iPhone 3G model.

Contrary to what other tech websites in the UK have been claiming as "exclusives", Pocket-lint can reveal based on real fact that the iPhone will be available for £299.99 for the 8GB model and 16GB for £359.99.

This also includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 6 months after you activate your iPhone.

At the end of the 6 months you can continue to receive unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for £10 per month. O2 says they will notify customers at the end of the 6 month period by text with the option to unsubscribe.

UK customers will be able to choose one of O2's standard Pay and Go tariffs to use with your iPhone, and, the more you top-up each month, the more free minutes or texts you'll receive.

According to O2 this offer is applicable to all new and upgrading customers who purchase an iPhone on Pay and Go until 31 Dec December 2008.

Terms and conditions reveal that unlimited data and Wi-Fi applies to use in the UK only, subject to excessive usage policy. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available at any of the 9500 Wi-Fi hotspots from O2's partners The Cloud or BT Openzone.

UPDATE: O2 has since the writing of this article removed prices. We were unable to get a screen grab at the time, however full text read:

  • Hang on, Pay and Go. And it'll cost £10 a month. Surely that's a contract phone and therefore should be free ? Or am I missing something really obvious ? Posted by Adrian, UK
  • Iphone or PS3? Hmmmm .. what a rip off! Posted by Albert, UK
  • No the £10 a month is an extra "BOLT ON" they do it for they're normal payg at the moment. If u choose not to have the bolt on, u can use it as per normal. Posted by Nick, UK
  • I know people don't want to be bound to a contract, but with a 18 month contract at £35 a month, you get 600 mins and 500 messages, and unlimited web usage. Its kind of a no brainer really. Especially as the iphone is then discounted to only £100!

PAYG should just buy the 1st gen iphone unlocked instead

  • Matt, when has £630 for the 18 month contract been a no-brainer ? You'd have to have no-brain (geddit?) since you also have to stump up for the iPhone as well. Posted by Adrian, UK
  • Tariffs are available to view now.

I make the basic cost of ownership for a 16GB iPhone on a £35 contract to be £789.00. And that's before you've called your mates to tell them you have one.

  • Think about it folks - its just a phone.
    Its a complete rip-off.

  • I can understand paying monthly for 3G networks o2 had partnerships with; but surely using wifi in your home or other free wifi networks is still free without the "bolt on"??? Sorry if its a dumb question. Posted by Nick, UK
  • What does "Bolt On Mean"? Posted by ben, england
  • Right on! I was going to move heaven and earth to get a 3G iPhone, but £789 just for starters - they must be kidding. Then O2 make it look as if you can get a PAYG version, but no - first they wait to see how many suckers they can sign up, and when that's done, maybe you can get a PAYG at Xmas. Posted by Nev, UK
  • DONT GET CONNED!

O2's "Unlimited Web Bolt-On" for PAYG does NOT support GPRS and Email - Thats right. It covers ONLY "web browsing" or use of email via O2's own mail servers. I just bought a HP iPAQ 514 (Smartphone) with PAYG and a web "bolt on" only to find i couldnt use it for ANYTHING other then web browsing. Phoned them up and they confirmed that only Contract customers have access to "full" mobile web. Its a rip-off. Dont do it. Please. I have reported them to several agencies. Take it easy.
