Following the reports that Toshiba, losers in the HD disc format war, is prepping Blu-ray "killing" DVD technology, a new logo has been approved by the Tosh-led DVD Forum.

The new "DVD Download DL" logo has been given the okay by the Forum during its most recent Steering Committee meeting, leading to obvious speculation that this will be the brand for the new offering from Toshiba.

The previous reports said Toshiba is working on "an extension to the DVD format" which would upscale DVD to results comparable to Blu-ray, but will be much cheaper.

But it now seems as well as the improved image quality, Toshiba is looking to add interactivity and perhaps bonus material via internet connectivty - something it led the market on with its HD DVD format.

The Japanese news sources suggested that Toshiba will start to offer a DVD player based on the new technology within 6 months, so watch this space.

  • Blu-ray has NOTHING to worry about. This format(A.K.A Fake HD) can not produce the picture and sound quality Blu-ray can.If Toshiba could out do Blu-ray with this, they wouldn't have gotten upset when Blu-ray questions popped up at their press conference introducing the upscaler(A.K.A Fake HD),they would have wanted to brag about it Posted by Jason, USA

Not necessarily anything to do with Toshiba, but DVD Download seems like interesting proposal in its own right - burning legit movie DVDs in stores or at home. It seems unlikely to be linked to the article, which is appears to be plain wrong.

  • This is revolutionary. DVD with the web enabled features will be interesting to see. They already have in screen cometary on DVD. This combined with a super graphics conversion could excite people buying DVD.
Maybe if the industry as a whole had taken this sort of evolutionary approach from the beginning we would be talking about the amazing growth of DVD now instead of speculating on the future of Blu-ray.

  • This is far from revolutionary. It is Toshiba being a poor sport losing to Blu-ray.If they couldn't pull off marketing HD-DVDs which was High Definition.,why would people be dumb enough to settle for upconversion which isn't even High definition ,nor is it a sound upgrade. You will get the same old compressed Dolby Digital DVD flat sound.Blu-ray has lossless audio which sounds better then most movie theaters Posted by Jason, USA
  • I'm not an audiophile nor a videophile but I just enjoy clear movies with great sound. DVD for me works and like many successful products has "good enough" technology. If my goal were to impress the socks of my friends coming over to watch TV in my home, then Blu-ray would be a worthwhile added investment. But I generally watch movies with my wife and kids so I don't see any added value in upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray and far far from the added value in upgrading from VHS to DVD. So if Toshiba wants to improve or optimize my viewing on my current DVD collection with minimal fuss, I say, welcome! Posted by Sam, USA
