A team of researchers have come up with a new satellite navigation system, which they say could make it easier for motorists to avoid queues.

The "Congestion Avoidance Dynamic Routing Engine" - or Cadre monitors conditions on the road ahead,

But is also allowed subscribers to feed information back on the road conditions that they have experienced.

So they will get information live via, most likely, their mobile phone, whilst they are driving such as how long the journey is likely to take if they continue on the same route or recommend alternatives.

It will also enable the promoters of the system to build up an accurate picture of how long journeys can take at any time of the week, adds The daily Telegraph.

"The system will be able to tell you the best time to leave home", explains Patrick Beullens of Portsmouth University's mathematics department, which was involved in the project along with a number of companies, Hampshire County Council and TRL, formerly the Government's road research arm.

"We can also help you make your journey as short as possible by minimizing delays", he added.

It has already been tested on 2100 journeys made around Hampshire on key routes including the M27, M3 and A3.
