Two iPhone queuers outside Apple store in Regent Street "Unprecedented" demand not spilling onto pavement

It's the "buzz" gadget of the moment, however it seems that the "buzz" hasn't filtered through to the man on the street.

Less than 24 hours before the new 3G version of the iPhone goes on sale, UK customers on the ground are thin compared to the last launch on a rainy dark November evening.

Pocket-lint took a trip to the Apple store on Regent Street late this afternoon to see how well O2's message, urging people to queue early for the device, had been received.

There were only two would-be iPhone 3G owners waiting on the pavement, prepared to brave a night out on the mean streets of London, in order to be guaranteed stock of the device.

Sunil, a Malaysian ex-Apple reseller employee, first in the queue, is planning to auction off his number one spot to the highest bidder. So far the bidding has reached the dizzy heights of £2.

Second in line is Antonio, a Mexican fashion student now living in St Johns Wood. The 19-year-old is a self-confessed Apple fanboy and thinks the iPhone 3G is "amazing".

"It's really stylish", Antonio said of the device, as our roving Pocket-lint reporter showed him our shiny new iPhone 3G, up and running in all its glory.

Antonio is planning on getting the 8GB version on the £35 per month contract when the store's doors open early tomorrow morning.

What happens if Sunil doesn't sell his spot? "I'll probably buy one," he said reluctantly.

  • Sunil looks suspiciously familiar to one junior mine who went by the same name. Anyway, I shorted Apple stock this week so I will admit - I want it to flop. The reasons are common sense - the 2nd generation iphone is launched at a time when consumer sentiment is at all time low. Just think about it, if Company X decided to launch a premium product at this point, most investors would think, you better taper down your expectation. Furthermore, the $199 novelty has worn off, consumers arent stupid, they see the total cost of ownership (like paying for a personal trainer at a gym) and know this is an additional cost burden they cannot afford right now.
    More importantly, the entire Mobile 3G hoo-hey has been nothing short of spin from a business point of view. Who in the right mind wants to pay a significant premium accessing Internet content when he or she can do it for practically free? Thats the point ain't it - get suckered with the plan ( xGB data and what have you not) and that actually represents the cost you have to pay to enjoy mobile Internet? So whats the cost of Mobile Internet? Try Free or Next to nothing due to the plethora of WiFI hotspots and the like.
    The second has to do with Mobile ME. Thats actually a better idea that trusting the good natured telcos to shove it up the customers **** by tying them down to a contract. IMHO the Apple folk did not pay enough attention to the number one issue which is - AFFORDABILITY! Cut the prices, offer customers a value proposition and make money via MySpace and the whatever. No hidden costs, no hoopla and a lot of whoopass.

  • anyone in the market for a new phone is aware that they get a subsidised handset for signing up to a contract. Personally, I have paid 35-45 a month for about the last ten years so it isn't an additional cost burden. The iPhone plans actually represent good value for money IF you need to use mobile data.

    As for having ads on my phone. Forget it.
