Pocket-lint can reveal that the much-anticipated iPhone 2.0 software update for existing iPhone owners will be not be released until 12 July in the UK.

Following a reader tip-off (thanks Andrew) we have spoken to Apple direct who has confirmed that the company are delaying the release of the software until tomorrow.

Saturday "afternoon" was the closest the Apple spokesperson would get to confirming exactly when the release would go live as an automatic update, a disappointment for current owners looking forward to the upgrade.

The reason for this delay is due to the amount of iPhone 3G activations Apple is expecting today via iTunes and clearly wants to avoid the kind of system problems that O2 has experienced.

In addition to the App Store, the iPhone 2.0 software update includes enterprise support, contact search, complete iWork and MS Office document viewing support.

There's also the ability to delete or move emails in bulk, saving images from emails, a scientific calculator, parental controls and support for 16 additional languages.

  • I tried v early, got told I could download 2.0, left my downloading while I went to the pub (with my phone); by the time I got back from pub 1hr later we were back to 1.1.4 and it wouldn't acknowledge I had already downloaded the 2.0 version. Grrr. One day's delay nothing in the scheme of things but a bit annoying for us die-hards. Posted by Bill R, UK
