With just-released data coming in suggesting that Nintendo's Wii is the top-selling video game console in the United States with 10.9 million units shifted, we thought we'd reveal whether the Pocket-lint readership thinks the system is here to stay.

In the most recent Pocket-lint reader poll, we asked you: "Is the Nintendo Wii just a fad?" Results have now come in and it seems that just over half of you think that the Wii has the legs to make it long-term with 46% saying yes and 54% saying no.

Speaking at the E3 gaming event Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime spoke openly of the console being described by the F-word, stating: "...the word 'fad' is no longer operable".

With recent hardware announcements from Nintendo - including the WiiSpeak mic and and the MotionPlus add-on for more sensitive controllers - it could be argued that interest in the system will only grow.

As well as new peripherals, new games are incoming that will further appeal to that lucrative family market the Wii has done so well to develop and capture.

Wii Sports Resort, the follow up to the original Wii Sports launch title is due to expand that particular brand of fun while Wii Music should cash in on the recent success of instrument-themed console games in a uniquely Wii way.

Criticism may still be levelled at the Wii for not being aimed at, specced enough for, or boast the right titles for "proper" gamers, but it's hard to deny the current sales figures - although only time will tell if the same question needs to be asked this time next year...

  • It's a fad, I know so many people that splashed out loads of money on Wii stuff like Wii fit and have used it about 3 times, slid it under the bed and never used it again. Just check eBay to see how many people realise this 'fad'

You also get bored waving your arms around like some sort of retard and long to play a game using just your digits. (not being lazy, its just true)

My PS3 on the other hand, takes pride of place in the entertainment system a really nice blu-ray player, network media extender and top notch games machine, used almost every day.

  • What i love about People calling the Wii and Fad and only for casual gamers is that its the only games console that only plays games, The PS3 is only ever brought as its a cheep blu ray player and the 360 is brought as its just a cheap PC for HD downloads nad FPS games.

And the PS3 is a top notch games machine? I think its got about 2 exclusive games worth buying the rest of the games are nowhere near as solid or complete as the 360 versions or as interesting as the Wii versions.

A prime example of that being Pro Evo this year, Good On 360, Great on Wii, Unplayable on the PS3

In my opinion they messed up the first proper big firmware upgrade, they messed up the launch by expecting people to fork out £500, They cant even get free software like Home to not be delayed. In my opinion They lied about Killzone with its Mac created videos that looked better then it actually was (u can add Motostorm to that too)
And the next big thing? Little Big Adventure, A game that seems entirely marketed towards about 150 middle age ZX Spectrum programmers and i think will sell around 150 copies (thats proberbly 10% of PS3 owners)

I think Lik Sang will be laughing from Up high watching them slowly die
