Carphone's free webbook deal goes live

10.2-inch Elonex offered on 2-year £25 mobile broadband packages

NEWS: 21 July 2008 17:03 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

We have previously brought you the news that this offer was to launch, but we can now reveal that the Carphone Warehouse's free webbook deal is live.

The "webbook" in question is a 10.2-inch ultra mobile PC made by Chinese company Elonex Technology.

The webbook will be available this month from either £25 per month on an 3GB Orange mobile broadband contract - if users sign up to a 2-year deal - or can be bought as a standalone device from around £220.

The webbook runs either Linux or Windows XP and offers integrated b/g Wi-Fi, three USB ports, a 1.6GHz processor, 512MB DDRII RAM and an SD/MMC memory card reader.

Weighing in at only 1.3kg, the diminutive laptop gets a fully-enabled standard 84-key QWERTY keyboard and measures in at 252 x 183 x 31.8mm.

There's 2GB of flash memory - that can be upgraded to a 2.5-inch HDD, audio out/in, VGA Monitor Out, and a three cell Lithium Polymer battery that offers 2.5 hours of juice.

The Carphone Warehouse says this is the start of a "whole range" of webbooks, powered by Elonex Technology, that they plan to offer.
