Samsung has announced a new ultra-thin laptop that it hopes will challenge Apple and HP at the thin game.

While the television manufacturers of the show fought over who had the slimmest television set, Samsung unveiled the X360 (yes we know it sounds similar to Lenovo's X300 range) at IFA in Berlin claiming victory over Apple on the diet stakes.

The new model will sport a 13.3-inch screen and weigh just 1.27kg, a snip lighter than the Apple MacBook Air's 1.36kg.

However rather than cut back features to make the size and weight, the X360 promises three USB ports, a built-in HDMI connection, a 34mm ExpressCard slot and VGA output.

There is also a 7-in-1 memory card reader and Ethernet socket.

Inside and you'll get an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless connectivity, 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD), and an Intel Centrino 2 processor.

The X360, which is capable of lasting 6-10 hours on a single charge will be available from September.

The X360 will cost around £1200.

We will keep you posted.

  • It's lighter, but is it thinner? I thought for sure it was thinner because of the teaser headline.

  • Hi-gloss plasteeque!

Man, I thought Atari got into notebooks for a second.
Oh, and $ 3000 model probably ships with a "downgrade to XP" cheque...

  • That looks really fat in comparison to the MacBook Air. The Air is, with its hard and heavy Aluminium not very light but much thinner than this. Posted by Tom, Switzerland
  • Lighter, Faster and as usual: Much cheaper. That sounds cool to me! I liked apples approach of such a small Laptop but as I would never buy any apple-stuff I'm really looking foreward to test this small Laptop. Maybe the perfect hackintosh - of course with Linux as primary OS on it :-) Posted by Pedro, Switzerland
  • Still don't think it will outsell the Air though.
