The toughphone from Sonim is pretty tough, however a new challenger from another company has surfaced that not only promises to be hard enough to withstand a good beating but adds a load of extra features to boot.

Called the LM801, the brightly coloured yellow and black handset is rugged, water- and dust-proof and as we were shown at IFA in Berlin capable of being thrown about.

Tech specs read like a camping list. There is an electronic compass, an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, MP3 player, and FM radio.

If that wasn't enough there is even a torch added to the phone making it ideal for adventurers. However the most confusing addition is a laser pointer, perhaps just in case you need to do a quick presentation to a bunch of climbers at the top of K2.

The dual-band handset isn't currently available in the UK, however a spokesperson for the company told us they were looking for a distributor.

We will keep you posted.

  • A laser pointer is like an old signal mirror to get rescuers attention .

  • OK - If you are in the UK, you can order the LM801 from www.futuregizmos.co.uk - £149.99 plus vat. I have one sitting on my desk - dropped it, dunked it in water - great phone - does just what it say's on the packet! Compass works well and altimeter is super sensitive - works well with my orange simm card!! Posted by richard burnett, UK
  • Is it Sonim Xtreme Performance™ One (xp1) at http://www.sonimtech.com/features_xp1.html or Condurro LM801 at http://www.condurro.com/toughphone.htm?????? Posted by Nikko, USA

  • Interesting.... article is describing Sonim LM801 with a second screen on the back, compass, etc. But Sonim's model does not have all that... Posted by Nick, USA
  • Nick, this isn't a Sonim product, but another manufacturer challenging the Sonim toughphone.

I think the confusion has come from Engadget, who via'ed the story from us last week claiming it was a Sonim handset, incorrectly mind you. I know they have now said that it wasn't a Sonim handset, but there you go. I hope that clears up the confusion.

  • I did a bit of research and found that this phone is actually made (probably designed) in China by a Shenzhen company. They even have a olive green version made for the Chinese army.

I've never used a China phone before, anyone who used the LM801 care to comment?

The price of this phone from a China website is 1100RMB, around 110 pounds or USD160.
