Samsung has said it is considering buying SanDisk, currently valued at $3.2 billion.

"We are looking at various opportunities regarding SanDisk, but nothing has been decided yet," a spokesman told Reuters.

Industry commentators are saying the buy could be bad news for Toshiba, whose shares have fallen on the news, as Toshiba is planning a partnership with SanDisk to double its chip production.

SanDisk said it "periodically has conversations with multiple parties, including Samsung, regarding a variety of potential business opportunities."

Last month it was rumoured that Seagate was considering buying SanDisk.
