Nero claims to have made things simpler with the latest incarnation of its digital media and home entertainment software.

Nero had a chat with its customers and the result is Nero 9, which is claimed to offer "one solution to easily create, edit, rip, copy, backup, convert and share their music, videos and photos within their connected digital home, on online communities or on portable devices".

Updates include the inclusion of playback, ripping, burning, copying and backup functions with one-click tabs in the Nero StartSmart intuitive command centre, as well as an auto backup tool.

Nero StartSmart also now includes Gracenote music recognition service providing song and artist information for audio files.

For people who record HD movies on their camcorders - the new version of the software adds a tape-scan feature for quick and easy previews and scene selections.

Also worth a mention is the online Blu-ray Disc Authoring Plug-in for burning HD video to Blu-ray Discs.

The multimedia player has been redesigned and, for video editing, an Ad Spotter has been designed to get rid of commercials from a recorded movie.

In addition, there's the new Music Grabber feature, which identifies music clips in a movie or music video and automatically extracts the audio, to save as MP3 and add to playlist.

Nero 9 also includes Nero Live, which lets you watch live tv on your PC, including the ability to two channels at once with Picture-in-Picture capabilities, time shift for up to 60-minutes, and listen to DVB radio.

Nero 9 is £59.99.
