At last! A use for video calling

13 February 2006 17:03 GMT / By Ben Harvard Taylor

I've had an Eureka moment. I've finally found a valid reason to use the video calling functionality on my 3G mobile phone. In fact, the idea has taken hold to such an extent that I'm going out to get my wife one tomorrow.

Video calling still isn't used as a matter of course - hardly surprising when you think how little fixed-line video phones were used. I'm really not sure I want people seeing me when I'm talking to them anyway! Most of the time I'm not paying attention or picking my nose and it would be embarrassing.

However, using a video mobile to check my babies progress throughout the day or to see it when I'm away on business? Well, that something i'll definitely be using it for. Everyone I speak to talks of the rapidity with which your babe-in-arms becomes a spotty teenager and to make the most of the time. Well at least when I can't be there in person I can be on the end of a camera.

With 3G now mainstream there are loads of phones to choose from - many of which have already been reviewed on the site. However, it's pricey to use in it's current form.

Nokia may be doing something useful in this area - they announced at the annual mobile industry shin-dig that they're concentrating on voice over IP - a bit like the Skpe systems of today. In fact, they've already said they're working with them. That should bring the price down, really set the cat amongst the mobile network pigeons.
