CeBIT - Sony to launch music download service

21 March 2004 14:15 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Following the announcement of the launch of the PSX, Sony has also confirmed that it will be joining the music download arena with a download service in Europe in June.

The service, which will be called “Connect” will offer over 300,000 songs. The catalogue will feature music not exclusive to the company's record label and include titles from independent record labels.

In usual Sony style the songs will be available for download in its proprietary music format ATRAC3 and tracks will be priced at 79pence in the UK. Consumers will be required to use Sony's Sonic Stage 2.0 software to use the service and will only be able to download songs to devices that support OpenMG copyright protection technology.

For the moment this means just Sony products, but the company is not ruling out deals with other companies.
