Sony is to pull out of all non-Japanese PDA markets

1 June 2004 21:13 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Sony has announced that it is to put out of all non-Japanese PDA markets around the world to concentrate on wirelessly connected devices that can play movies games and music, ie the PSP.

“Sony is reassessing the direction of the conventional PDA market and Sony
will not introduce any new Clie handheld models in the United States and Europe
this fall,” the group's French unit said.

Commentators believe the move is to allow Sony to focus on its phone division with Ericsson and create SmartPhones and games consoles rather than using the PalmOs for PDAs.

It is a major blow to PalmSource who until now where holding ground against Microsoft's PocketPC alternative.
