BT launches BlackBerry Internet Service to woo small businesses

1 June 2006 13:00 GMT / By Stuart Miles

BT is hoping to entice small business users back to its service by offering a new BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and add on satnav.

Using BIS, small enterprise users can send and receive email from their BlackBerry without the need of installing special server software or IT infrastructure.

BIS can collate mail from up to ten existing accounts – or the user can set up an account specifically for their BlackBerry.

Businesses can also transform their BlackBerry into a full-scale satellite navigation system by attaching a tiny, lightweight add-on unit to the BlackBerry 8700.

Once the user enters in their destination details, the system feeds through turn-by-turn visual and voice-prompt directions.

Because the system is server-based it will not cause memory overload problems with the user’s BlackBerry and it guarantees access to the most up-to-date directions based on the latest NAVTEQ maps.

BT has a special offer on satnav, with the first 3 or 6 months satnav rental free on 1 or 2 year contracts respectively with a BlackBerry 8700.
