MySpace goes down due to power failure

24 July 2006 14:23 GMT / By Amber Maitland

Online social networking phenomenon MySpace.com was temporarily temporarily shut down by a power outage of some sort.

It seems to be up and running, at least partially at the moment.

The BBC is reporting that the power outages were caused by extremely high temperatures in Los Angeles, California, where MySpace's servers are located.

Visitors to the site were greeted by the grammatically-challenged message: "hey everyone! There's been a power outage in our data center".

"we're in the process of fixing it right now, so sit tight. Hopefully we'll be back online within the hour."

"its (sic) 6:40pm PST now. wanna place a bet? –Tom"

The site also posted a flash game of Pacman to keep members interested.

The fact that the site going down for a few hours has managed to create such a stir in the media is testimony to the site's popularity and influence.

Over two million visitors use the site each month.
