One of Hitachi’s senior managers has dropped hints that a 1 terabyte desktop hard drive could be ready by the end of 2006.

The drives, which would measure 3.5 inches in diameter will be made for home PCs and servers.

Hitachi already offers a 500GB drive, while Seagate makes 750GB version, plus a home storage device that incorporates two 500GB drives.

Although it’s hard to believe consumers will need that much storage, with the growing popularity of digital video and recording, plus the space-hogging high-definition videos, the drives could be used in personal video recorders and televisions.
