Ahead of the launches of rumoured movie download sites from Amazon.com and Apple’s iTunes comes an announcement from AOL that its video store will now offer premium movie download-to-own videos.

Fox, Sony, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros studios have all signed deals to offer their movies through AOL Video, which launched in August.

At the moment, AOL offers both free programming and TV show downloads for a fee, and its on-demand TV content has recently been added to with shows from Fox and Sony that include 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Charlie’s Angels. These are usually on offer for $1.99.

For the launch of the new service, AOL has 25 movie titles on offer, ranging in price between $9.99 and $19.99 with hundreds more to come in the next few weeks.

AOL makes no mention of download-to-burn videos, stating that movies can be viewed on PCs and portable devices.

Sony Pictures are adding two new programming channels to AOL Video: AXN, and FunnyBone, which features older, popular sitcoms.
