Nokia has announced that it is to buy mapping software company gate5 AG so that it can compete in the satnav market.
The acquisition makes it easier for Nokia to offer its customers maps, routing, and navigation software on its mobile phones.
The company has worked with TomTom, Route 66, and Telmap in the past, and said that the deal wouldn’t affect those relationships, at least not immediately.
The VP and general manager of Nokia’s multimedia product division, Anssi Vanjoki said to Reuters, “Maps and navigation are natural elements to be offered in mobile devices but this area hasn’t developed as fast as expected by the market”.
Nokia hopes this deal will speed up the adoption of navigation applications on mobile phones and smartphones.
