Electronic devices left plugged in on standby use up just as much electricity if not more than when the devices are actually in use, we are told. A new prototype for a power strip features a glowing blue connection cord that aims to show us how much electricity we’re wasting.

The Static Energy+Design Network’s Power Aware Cord pulses and glows with different patterns and different intensities depending on the power flowing through it. The idea behind it is maybe if we can see how much energy we’re wasting, we’d be more likely to turn things off or unplug them.

At the moment it’s just a “design concept” and not in production, but if enough interest is generated, you might seeing it hitting a store near you.
